Torchy’s Tacos, the beloved Austin-based taco slingers, will be bringing the heat to St. Pete’s Tyrone Square, ostensibly this December, though the company’s plan review – seen by What Now Tampa – didn’t hit Florida’s official public records until earlier this month.

Representatives for Torchy’s Tacos did not return What Now Tampa’s requests for comment.
News of the restaurant first broke back in August, with the Tampa Bay Business Journal reporting that the company had filed initial documents with the city of St. Petersburg for “plans to renovate the 3,650-square-foot building,” formerly occupied by Pollo Tropical.
At the time, a spokesperson for Torchy’s told the Business Journal that the restaurant was “tentatively” slated to open in December, but that the building was still in the “early stages of renovation.”
Like so many popular restaurants nowadays, Torchy’s began as a humble food truck in Austin, TX in 2006. The brand’s snarky yet playful identity – not to mention its mouthwatering tacos and decadent queso – was a hit with locals both in the city and beyond, such that its footprint has since grown to more than 100 stores across the country.
That success and growth are largely down to the company’s “Damn Good” mantra, which keeps it “constantly innovating to ensure we’re delivering the tastiest tacos, queso, and margaritas in the game.”
