After building a collective 35 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Mark and Carly Johnson decided to try something totally different: making ice cream. The couple will soon launch The Creamery, a new ice cream shop that Mark says will bring New Port Richey “high-end ice cream at a fair price.”

“We’ve been successful in healthcare, but we want to do something that would be different and for the community,” Mark Johnson told What Now on Monday. “So we went to Scoop School and learned to make ice cream.”

Unlike many ice cream brands, The Creamery will make all its ice cream in-house, rather than getting it from a distributor. It will come in your favorite classic flavors, and in specialty varieties like Banana Bread, Peanut Butter & Jelly, and Coffee & Donut. There will also be a sizable selection of dairy-free flavors.

The goal is to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for locals with top-notch ice cream that won’t have you fearing for your wallet, Johnson says.

“In our research, we found that at a lot of these really nice ice cream shops, you’re walking out spending $12. No way. You shouldn’t have to cringe when your kids says they want ice cream.”

With comfortable indoor seating, The Creamery will be available for birthday parties and other events, taking an approach Johnson describes as, above all, community-focused.

“We’ve also started working with local schools, donating to their fundraisers,” Johnson said. “We want to be that community ice cream shop—like it used to be, be for everybody got greedy.”

The Creamery will open at 9826 Little Road, in the Shoppes at Golden Acres. Johnson says the new ice cream spot is working toward an opening in mid- to late-February. You can follow @thecreameryhomemade on Instagram to keep up with the launch.
