Founded in Jacksonville by former firefighters Chris and Robin Sorensen back in 1994, Firehouse Subs has grown to be a major contender in the fast-casual sandwich market, boasting more than 1,210 restaurants in 46 states, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, and Canada. As the brand continues to grow, Firehouse has its sights set on St. Pete for another location, this time at 2125 66th Street N.

Behind the upcoming location is franchisee and longtime Firehouse Subs employee Colin Means. Means spoke with What Now on Wednesday about his experience with the franchise and plans for future growth in the Greater Tampa area.

“I actually started at 21 as a team member,” Means said. “Then I got promoted and a few years later became the general manager. We ended up buying that store from the previous owners.”

What’s changed for the brand in all at that time? What Now asked. Or, what hasn’t?

“Well, the quality hasn’t changed at all, which is of course what has me investing so much in it. We don’t cut corners or sacrifice anything when it comes to the quality of the food.”

The Firehouse Subs menu features Hot Subs like the Firehouse Steak & Cheese, the Smoke House Beef & Cheddar Brisket, and the Spicy Cajun Turkey. There’s also a selection of salads and the recently added King’s Hawaiian® Pork & Slaw Sandwich. Means says he’s a fan of the classics: the franchisee’s favorite is the Italian, with Turkey Bacon Ranch as a close second.

Firehouse Subs is also famous for its work with the Public Safety Foundation, which provides lifesaving equipment to firefighters and other first responders.

“Since the Foundation started, it has granted over $75 million to provide equipment, training, and support to hometown heroes,” says the Firehouse website. “All because at Firehouse Subs we believe that making great subs is not enough; you have to do good, too.”
