Bradenton’s The Breakfast Company to Open Fourth Location This Spring

For this family-run business, the opening on Orange Avenue is a kind of homecoming

Mother-son team Terri and Dimitri Syros started their breakfast-and-lunch spot The Breakfast Company back in 2020, but their family has been in the restaurant business for decades.

“My grandfather had our first family restaurant,” Dimitri told What Now in a conversation on Friday. “A Greek restaurant, El Greco Cafe. He ran it for twenty years.”

The family had simply always been a restaurant family, and when Dimitri’s grandfather passed unexpectedly in 2019, a period which led directly into the sudden long stay at home in 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic, Dimitri felt himself pulled away from his studies at law school, with the urge to open a restaurant and keep the family tradition going. Dimitri and Terri opened the Breakfast Company at 7246 55th Avenue in Bradenton.

“But then the business really took off,” Dimitri said—and indeed, the Breakfast Company went on to open two more restaurants in Sarasota. “It was a lot more successful than I had anticipated. I graduated and tried to pursue law at the same time as growing this small restaurant group. Until finally I decided to go full time. This is where the passion is, to do what we’ve always done in our family.”

Which brings The Breakfast Company to its fourth location, expected to open this April, at 411 North Orange Avenue. This location is special, Dimitri says, because it’s opening on the same block where you used to find El Greco Cafe. It’s a little smaller than the other Breakfast Company locations, with more outside seating, and it’s currently being put together with a brand new design—although you’ll find the same menu you find at the other locations.

That menu features a wide range of breakfast choices: handhelds like the Breakwich (scrambled eggs, American cheese & applewood smoked bacon served on a croissant bun), Skillet Bowls like the Mediterranean (Chopped gyro meat, baby spinach, diced tomato, grilled onion, feta cheese, El Greco tzatziki sauce), omelettes, benedicts and more. Then there’s the lunch menu featuring sandwiches, the El Greco Gyro, soups, and salads. (And yes, the gyro and the tzatziki are the very same recipes once served at El Greco Cafe.)

“It’s come together very quickly,” said Dimitri. “It just seemed like such an incredible opportunity to be on Orange Avenue again. We may even have some original staff, people who have become like family members. Some familiar faces for people who remember El Greco Cafe.”
